The Armored Vehicle-Launched Bridge Systems (AVLBs) based on M60 tanks have been delivered and are now in service with the 5th Separate Tank Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The U.S. commitment to provide Ukraine with the M60 AVLBs was announced in March 2023.
A State Department report indicates that Ukraine has received 18 armored bridge systems from the United States.
The M60 AVLB, based on the M60 tank, can construct bridges up to 18 meters in length and, depending on the bridge modification, carry a load of up to 60 tons.
The first version of the M60 AVLB was produced from 1963 to 1967. Most of the hulls of the M60A1 AVLB were old M60A2 Patton tanks, converted to AVLB as a result of an extensive modernization from 1987 to 1996.
